FaceBookIt: Makeup Inspired by ‘1984’ by George Orwell

by Elaine Zapanta

This week on FaceBookIt, it’s all about bold eyes and bold lips!

I am recreating Shepard Fairey’s take on 1984, the dystopian novel by George Orwell. This particular cover was commissioned by Penguin Books UK in 2008, with Fairey also creating a new cover for Animal Farm. (Shout out to Cake for pointing me in the right direction!) Okay, enough about that. Let the real fun begin!

Clockwise from top right: Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette, Happy Skin Eye Am Here to Stay 24h gel Eyeliner in Perfect Black, MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study, Make up Geek eyeshadow in Corrupt, and MAC Matte Lipstick in Russian Red

After you’ve prepped your face with stuff you normally use (moisturizer, primer, all that), I suggest you start with the eyes so it’s easier to clean up later.

The thing about doing smoky eyes is you have to make sure no eyeshadow residue is on your under eye area or your makeup will look really sloppy. I primed my lids with MAC’s Paint Pot in Bare Study and the lower lash line with Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original.

I started with Tease as the transition color and then began creating smoke in the outer corner using the shade Pistol. I layered a bit of Corrupt on the outer corner to give it more depth. Don’t forget to blend out the edges so it’s “smokier.” I chose Half Baked as my main lid color.

Next, I tightlined using Happy Skin Eye Am Here To Stay 24h Gel Eyeliner in Perfect Black. To mirror the lid situation, I put Tease in the lower lash line, Pistol and Corrupt in the outer third of the lower lash line, and Half Baked in the inner corners. I curled my lashes and put on Benefit They’re Real Mascara. This look is better with false eyelashes but I didn’t have any when I did this look!

After that you can proceed to doing the rest of the face. I used Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade in Ebony to define my brows. I kept my brows really natural to its shape so that it doesn’t look drawn or something. My base is Covergirl TruBlend in 425. To conceal the dark circles under my eyes, I used Bobbi Brown’s Corrector in Peach and Creamy Concealer in Warm Natural. To set everything, I used Ben Nye’s Banana Luxury Powder.

For a bit of glow, I put on the tiniest amount of Benefit Watts Up above the cheekbones, on the brow bones and on the Cupid’s bow. The lipstick is MAC Matte Lipstick in Russian Red. Since I have two focal points for this look—the eyes and lips—I didn’t put blush on. It’s up to you if you feel like you need more color.

And that’s FaceBookIt Look #2! Easy peasy!

Honestly, when I saw this cover, I instantly knew I would be doing some sort of smoky eye and then realized I also had to incorporate the reds. It’s difficult to pull off that kind of look but Tumblr reminded me of that George Orwell quote:

“Men are infinitely malleable.”

So here’s me being malleable. Come at me, Big Brother, lol jk.

Hey, I know I’ve been blogging on and off for quite a while now and I know you all miss my face. (Admit it.) I’ve been having a hard time coming up with content for my blog (the struggle is so REAL) when Bookbed’s Head Cheer Reader asked me if I can do Face Book It as a weekly thing for the whole month of December. We debuted with Eleanor & Park and some of you liked it and I LOVE doing this. It’s fun. I think that’s the gist of this post. I may not have my beauty blogging mojo back but you can still see my face on a weekly basis on bookbed.org. This is too long!!! Here’s the second look — George Orwell’s 1984! Hope you like it! 🙂

  3. […] If you are new in bookbed (hello and happy holidays!), FaceBookIt is a segment where we come up with makeup looks based on our favorite book covers. We debuted with one of our favorite YA novels of recent years, Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park which you can check out here. We also did Shepard Fairey’s take on 1984 by George Orwell, which you go visit here. […]
