The only thing I could say after I finished reading Huntley Fitzpatrick’s My Life Next Door was “God” with the ‘o’ elongated more and more over the next times I said it repeatedly.
I don’t exactly know what it was about My Life Next Door that made me fall in love with it. Maybe it was the writing, the ease with which the words rolled around in my head.
Or maybe it was the characters that were damn near perfect or at least as perfect as any flawed human being can be. (Well, except maybe Jase Garrett. I mean no one can be THAT perfect. *swoon*)
I guess I loved this mostly because of the mixture of different factors packaged as a young adult novel. None of the scenes between Sam and Jase felt awkward or cheesy to me, just natural and relatable.
And there was even politics here and there. In fact, Fitzpatrick was able to combine different facets of life that are just as interesting as young love into this perfect burrito. The exploration of economics, family planning, sexual encounters, friendship, discovery of oneself and loved ones… It all fit so well with each other that all I could do after was call out a deity.
My Life Next Door has got to be one of my favorite reads of 2014. It’s perfect if you want to read something light and kilig on a sunny Sunday afternoon. (You know, pick it up today, read it tomorrow?) ☁
