Bookbed reviews: ‘D’01’ by Sassy Fova

by Mikki Shiu

Kat Arcanghel has just turned 18 and she feels that it is the right time to fall in love. She finds herself falling for Alech Crisologo, but she has always thought of herself as adeviant/rebel and there’s nothing more mainstream than crushing on the guy that everybody loves, thus she fights her feelings and tries to search for the right one—just not him.

Will Kat continue rebelling against her own heart, or will she let her heart conquer the battle and let it lead the way? She’ll find the answer when she meets D’01. Read reviews: Goodreads

I love how Sassy Fova incorporated colloquial Filipino terms into the story, plus her description of Ilocos Norte and its culture was flawlessly written!

Plot-wise, it was not as predictable as I expected. The story itself was refreshing, especially the diary part and the informative thoughts behind the gifts, which I will not elaborate further to avoid spoiling it for other soon-to-be readers.

Also, my favorite part of the book is Alech’s point of view because you really get to know his character. You get the full picture of how all the misinformation and gossip played a part in the fate of the two main characters as well.

(Spoiler alert! Highlight succeeding text to read.) At first, I was irritated with Kat’s bitchy attitude towards Alech. I was asking myself while reading, “Did I miss some part of the story? Why is Kat so irrational with Alech?” It was only towards the end that I understood why she acted that way, though I still think her attitude was a bit over the top.

On the technical side, the format in the ebook was a bit confusing. I had a hard time distinguishing the present and the memories. This probably isn’t the author’s fault, but I wish they could have formatted the paragraphs to make the different timelines easier to tell apart.

Overall, the plot of D’01 seems like an original, refreshing take for a young adult book, especially a Filipino YA one. I love how the writer incorporated Filipino ideals into her story. Kat and Alech are a very cute couple and their unique love adventure has made quite an impression on me. Just when you think you already know them and can foresee what will happen, Sassy Fova throws you a curve ball and a pleasant surprise.

One more thing: this book has convinced me to read more locally published books! The combination of a creative plot, well-researched information and great writing makes it all the more commendable and reflects in general how talented our local writers really are. Here’s to reading more local books and cheers to Sassy Fova! ☁
