Today is a pretty magical day as I’m doing a makeup look based on The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, and I’m doing it with the person who introduced me to the KonMari technique, Rae of Scatterbraintures!

Rae does a lot of extensively-researched beauty-related posts such as product reviews, comparative reviews, and makeup looks but what stood out to me as a reader are her de-stashing posts. She once wrote about letting go of 2/3 of her lipstick collection and once you’re done reading, you’ll want to let go of (some of) yours, too.

I found out about Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by accident. I was watching a lot of YouTube videos on minimalism and decluttering, and this video about a guy who filmed how he went through literally all of his material belongings appeared in the recommended section of my YouTube feed. I got inspired by what he did and looked for the book right away.

When one says “to tidy things up,” what used to come to mind was merely having a place for everything I own. But I had it all wrong. Apparently, one has to let go of stuff first—because storage solutions are for hoarders. I’ve been editing my belongings for several months now, so applying most of the recommendations in the book was relatively easy.

The struggle for me was mostly with makeup because, as I said, I have to let go of most of them. Marie said you should only keep the things that spark joy. I feel like I’ve already edited my makeup collection to the point that I can’t let go of even one more item. That said, I still have around 50+ lipsticks which clearly means I am far from done.

Based on the number of makeup I can realistically use up, I should be letting go of at least three-fourths of my collection. So, I am still figuring how to do that. But for now, here is a look using my makeup that “sparks joy.”

If most of my makeup disappears (which I’m hoping won’t happen before I’m emotionally ready), these are the ones I’m sure I’d still want to keep in my makeup bag. (Special mention to Japonesque Professional Lash Curler. My eye shape is weird and this thing-a-ma-jig made it easy for me to curl my lashes.)

So as you’ve probably gotten from Rae, the main principle of the KonMari method is gathering everything you own and only keeping the ones that spark joy to your life. I started with clothing because it is the easiest to let go, with little to no sentimental value. Then, I moved on to makeup, books, etc.

What I like about this method is it makes a lot of sense. It made sense when I threw away a pair of jeans that were never going to fit me even if I did constantly work out. It made sense when I gave away blushes I haven’t touched since purchasing them. And every time I got rid of an item, there was a feeling of satisfaction that made me want to pat myself in the back.

I made this look using what the beauty b/vlogging community calls Holy Grail products. These are the products I’ve been using often in my routine (obviously repurchasing once I’ve ran out) because they work for my skin tone/type and preference.
